What to wear Guide

What to bring and wear

If you follow a few simple guidelines, you can be assured of timeless and modern portraits that reflect your unique family and your story.

  1. Avoid big logos, writing and pictures on clothing, as they are distracting and will date your photos.

  2. Choose items for the whole family as if you were creating one outfit—if all the colours/prints and textures were on one person, how would it look?

  3. Don’t try and ‘match’, unless you normally dress like that. Instead, you want to complement each other.

  4. Put mum first—she deserves it! We often suggest that mum picks her outfit first and then everyone else coordinates around her outfit.

  5. Dress appropriately for the weather, season and location, including footwear (eg, consider dew, frost, long grass, after rain).

  6. Your Dog(s) – Please bring their lead and a long lead if you have one (for action shots). You can also bring their favourite treats and a toy.

Please don’t bring food to your session, or if you need to, please save it until we have finished. It’s very hard to photograph a child with a mouthful of food, and it’s very hard to take it away from them once they have it.

Do bring water and tissues/wipes. If you think your children might be shy or reluctant, we suggest bringing a toy or activity to the session. This helps them feel comfortable and gives them a sense of ownership of what’s happening. It’s also an opportunity to capture natural portraits of them doing something special that they love, or cuddling a toy that they may abandon in a few years.

PREPARING

Ensure your children are fed and well rested before your session, and please arrive at our meeting place on time (we may have another booking straight after yours).

CHOOSING LOCATIONS

We choose locations that suit your family (ages and interests), the season, the time of day, whether you have a dog, and any special requests. Your location and meeting place will be confirmed by SMS a couple of days before your session. We will have gotten a good idea of location preferences from you during our phone consultation, so if you think of something that we haven’t discussed, make sure you get in touch with us well before your session!

Some of my favourite locations may involve a bit of walking and some don’t have paths. We avoid playgrounds. Please let us know if anyone in your family has a grass allergy.

Inclement weather

Every family hopes for perfect weather for their outdoors session, and although we are very lucky in Brisbane to have a dry climate and lots of sunshine all year around, unfortunately the weather is not always perfect. Please remember that the weather is only one small factor in your portrait experience we know how to shoot and create stunning images in all kinds of different conditions. We will reschedule your session to a new date/time in the case of inclement weather only, ie, persistent rain and heavy cloud, hail, excessive heat, excessive cold and very strong wind. Mostly it’s necessary to make the final call on weather only a couple of hours before the session because weather can change quite suddenly. We ask you to please trust our experience when it comes to the weather, and rest assured that we desire a positive outcome for every family portrait experience.
